About Lynn's Lids What is a felted hat? ![]()
Felted hats are made from 100% wool yarn and are hand knit to be very large and then shrunk down using hot water, agitation and a little bit of soap. What ends up happening is the yarn strands fuse together with the strands knitted around them. Then you shape the hat ("block" it) and let it dry for a few days and you end up with a warm, durable, wind and water-resistant hat that keeps its shape. I use 2 strands of wool knit together in most of my hats so they are very warm and are therefore perfect for fall and winter. They can be worn in the rain since the felt keeps the water from soaking through and wool stays warm when it's wet. After a rainy day I let my hat dry for a few hours in its original shape and it's as good as new. On the right is a photo of one of my bowler hats prior to felting and blocking and on the far right is the finished product. What's in stock? Lynn's Lids are generally made to order, due to the fact that they are fitted, not one-size-fits, all. You select the colour(s) from the yarn I have in stock and the style, you measure your head and I start knitting. If you would like something different from what you see, just let me know. One hat takes about a week to knit, felt, and block. To view a collection of hats I've created, please see the lids page. |
